Israel launches air strikes in Syria, Damascus says two killed

Israel claims intercepted rockets came from Damascus

Israel 'wide-scale strikes' hit Iranian, Syrian targets near Damascus

The war in Syria has killed more than 370,000 people and displaced millions.

Israel said it struck dozens of Iranian targets in Syria on Wednesday in a "wide-scale" operation in response to rocket fire on the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights the day before. During the Israeli strike, Syrian forces fired a missile, which led to the destruction of their aerial defense batteries. The Iranian launch followed a rare Israeli daylight air raid near the Damascus International Airport.

It said that Syria destroyed "most" of the Israeli missiles. "That's what we did tonight", he said early Wednesday.

The IDF Spokesperson stressed that the Iranian attack on Israeli territory was further proof of the current mission of the Iranians in Syria.

IDF forces took swift action to neutralize the threat.

Two civilians were killed and a number of people were injured in an Israeli attack on the Syrian capital of Damascus.

A war monitoring group says the death toll from Israeli airstrikes in Syria has risen to 23, including 15 non-Syrians, some of them Iranians.

It said that 11 soldiers, including seven foreign pro-government fighters, were killed in the Israeli strikes.

SANA, the Syrian Arab News Agency, reported that two civilians were killed when an Israeli missile hit a private home in a town located outside of Damascus.

Russian Federation on Wednesday condemned Israel for the strikes. It was not clear whether the rocket launch was directly linked to the announcement.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov was quoted by TASS news agency as saying the operation "totally contradicts worldwide law".

He added that Moscow had reached out to its allies regarding the incident, the report said.

The Israeli army said they had targeted about a dozen military sites, including warehouses and military command centres.

Sound of explosions was reverberating across the capital city early Wednesday morning, it reported.

"It is the main building that serves the (Iranian) Revolutionary Guards... for coordinating the logistic facilities of transport of military hardware from Iran to Syria and from Syria onwards", he said.

Israel says it has carried out hundreds of strikes in Syria against Iranian targets trying to establish a permanent military presence there and against advanced weapons shipments to Tehran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah. Our message to Iran's leaders is simple: You are no longer immune. "Wherever you send your octopus arms - we will hack them off", said newly installed Defense Minister Naftali Bennett.

"I have made clear that any who attack us - we will attack them", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
