The second quake caused fires, power outages and some damage in the Searles Valley area around Ridgecrest, near the Mojave Desert, according to the publication.
The epicentre of the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.0 by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), was located 83km southwest of Ardabil at a shallow depth of 10km, the USGS said. It replaces the aged Richter scale.
