Some notable names from that long list are of William Austin, Michael Gough, Michael Caine, and Jeremy Irons.

The Cloverfield director Matt Reeves is behind the project which has also recently secured Paul Dano as the Riddler, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman and Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon.

Andy Serkis is reportedly in talks to portray Alfred Pennyworth.

Actor Colin Farrell poses for photographers upon arrival at the premiere of the film "Dumbo" in London, Thursday, March 21, 2019.

Warner Bros.is negotiating with Colin Farrell to play the Penguin in the Matt Reeves-directed "The Batman". Serkis played the villainous Ulysses Klaue for Marvel, he will be directing the upcoming Venom 2 for Sony, and now will get to hop in the DCEU as well if this report gets confirmed. Farrell is also no newbie when it comes to comic book villains, having played Bullseye in 2003's Daredevil, but I guess the less we say about that film the better.

The Penguin was previously played by Danny DeVito in Tim Burton's 1992 film Batman Returns and by Robin Lord Taylor in Fox's Gotham series.

In fact, the way the news was revealed about Pattinson's role in the new film didn't exactly go to plan, when he became a victim of the ol' Hollywood rumour mill.

"I'm early stages. Very, very early", Pattinson, 33, said. Deadline states that the Penguin "rounds out the trio of villains" Batman faces off against, but that doesn't mean we're not in store for even more characters from the comics.
