No surgery for Panthers' Newton, but season in doubt

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton walks off the field following the Panthers 20-14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following an NFL football game in Charlotte N.C. Friday Sept. 13 2019

Sources: No surgery for Newton after doc visit

The Panthers improved to their record to 5-1 in games that Allen has started as a result of their 30-20 win over the Tennessee Titans.

He flew to Green Bay, Wisconsin on Friday to visit renowned foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson.

"While Newton has been frustrated with how long his Lisfranc injury is taking to heal, surgery was not recommended and is not now in the plans", sources tell Rapoport. That didn't work out well for him or the Panthers, who went 0-2 to open the season. Newton has not yet begun to take part in team activities at practice and that alone seems a way off right now. However, there is a legitimate chance the Carolina Panthers quarterback will not play again in 2019. It was a nice rebound effort after Allen and the Panthers were utterly destroyed by the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8.

"He wants to compete so badly", Ron Rivera said.

Newton played the first two weeks of the season, admitting that he did not reveal the amount of discomfort he was in to the team, and since that point he and the Panthers have been in lockstep about taking every precaution with his recovery. "I did get the sense he was frustrated". "We'll see. Right now, we're going into this game with Kyle as the starter". It's still possible that his ailing foot will force him to injured reserve, which would officially end what has been a lost season for the former MVP.
