South Park: HBO Max Lands Streaming Rights to All 23 Seasons

HBO Max Announcements: Joker, Superman, Batman, More

HBO Max will launch in May 2020; unveils program slate at LA event

At an event on Tuesday, AT&T revealed that HBO Max will launch in May 2020 for $14.99 per month.

Instead, Bell Media president Randy Lennox said TV shows produced by Warner for HBO Max will mostly land on Crave's premium HBO tier, which costs roughly $20 per month. Binging new titles won't be an option for HBO Max viewers, as the company prefers to release shows weekly, the better to build buzz.

In exchange for that hefty check, HBO Max will host one of the most popular and long-running comedies of all time. HBO hopes to reach 50 million subscribers in the United States by 2025, and around 75-90 million across the US, Latin America, and Europe. That last bit is important because it's what's going to allow HBO Max to grow rapidly at the start. "The jokes come fast and frenetically in a smart comedy concoction we are so happy to deliver on HBO Max". That library will include originals from filmmakers Ridley Scott, Greg Berlanti and Issa Rae, as well as an upcoming series called House of the Dragon as co-created by Ryan Condal and George RR.

HBO Max costs the same as HBO Now, the company's standalone streaming service that launched in 2015, but offers a much larger library of TV shows and films. And there are roughly 34 million people who now pay for HBO in the US, so just because you pay for HBO at this point does not mean you will be eligible for the free year of HBO Max.

The corporate, in 2021, intends to suggest an ad-supported model of HBO Max, which additionally will likely be bundled with AT&T TV.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson was on-hand at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California where he explained that HBO Max is "very different from anything else that you've seen in the market so far", adding that, "This is not Netflix".

In a nutshell: The multi-year deal between South Park Digital Studios and HBO Max is reportedly valued at between $500 million to $550 million and includes access to 23 existing seasons and three new seasons. But it looks like the main problem remains in subscribing to two WB owned streaming services which seemingly provide the same DC content. There will be shows like Friends and Big Bang Theory which will soon become the property of HBO Max and people will be able to watch such shows there only.

With everything from classic dramas, to new comedies, and even kid-friendly content all wrapped up into one bingeable package, HBO Max is aiming to dominant the content streaming wars.
