Body's funeral for Atatiana Jefferson was planned for 2 p.m. Saturday before the judge postponed it. Thompson scheduled a hearing for Monday, Oct. 21, to determine if the restraining order would continue.
When police arrived at her home, Atatiana Jefferson was playing video games and baby-sitting her 8-year-old nephew.
The tragedy began when a neighbor, seeing an open door, called the police to check it out.
Jefferson's neighbor called 911 asking for a welfare check of the family but instead the call wasn't properly classified.
Iowa native Harrison Barnes will pay for the funeral of the woman killed by an officer inside her Texas home.
"The Carr family is invited, there is room for them, they are more than welcome, they'll be respected, they'll be treated with dignity and that's what should happen", he said.
Dean shone his flashlight into the window, said "Put your hands up, show me your hands", and fired a split second later, without identifying himself as police, bodycam video showed. Irvin said Atatiana's mother is not barred from participating, too, if she's able.
Jefferson heard noises, pulled her handgun out of her purse and pointed it at a bedroom window, Zion told police, according to the warrant.
At that point, she was shot and fell to the ground, the affidavit said. In those scenarios, police officers in most cases knock on the door and wait for an solution.
Barnes played for the Mavericks from 2016-19 and has given back to the community during his time spent there. Police released body camera footage right away, and the officer resigned and was charged.
"The biggest thing is, anytime someone has to go through that, the last thing you want to have to worry about is trying to come up with the money for a funeral", Barnes explained Thursday.
The funeral arrangements of Atatiana Jefferson have been cancelled after feuding between family members forced her father to take legal action.
Barnes, who plays for the Sacramento Kings, is paying for more than half of the service.
