The US based search engine giant was so sure about its Face Unlock's security that the company had removed all the fingerprint sensors from the Pixel 4 handsets.
But what's more concerning is the disclaimer that your Pixel 4 can be unlocked by "someone else if it's held up to your face, even if your eyes are closed". Even Google's old face unlock system for Android 4.1 required you to blink if your head seemed stationary. The list of new products includes Pixel Buds, Nest WiFi, at Mini, Chromebook and none the less Pixel 4.
This means your kid, partner or even a kidnapper could unlock your Pixel 4 while you're sleeping or unconscious, our sister site ZDNet noted.
If you've ever seen the navigation app on your phone going haywire and seemingly teleporting you across space and time, location inaccuracies are likely to blame. That's different from Apple Inc.'s "Face ID" system, which does require one's eyes to be open.
Further, the rear camera comes with new features like an updated Super Res Zoom, Live HDR+, Night Sight with Astrophotography, dual-exposure controls, an improved White Balance, and more. IPhone users can disable "Attention Aware" to make Face ID unlocking faster and easier, but also less secure. Yet, as BBC discovered, the facial recognition system is not as secure as it should be.
"Pixel 4 face unlock meets the security requirements as a strong biometric", a Google spokesperson said in an emailed statement. However, the company did talk about using Project Soli's MotionSense tech to start the process of unlocking the phone as soon as the user reaches for the phone.
The phones are expected to be available through all the major U.S. carriers including Verizon, C Spire, AT&T, Cellcom, T-Mobile, Sprint, Spectrum Mobile (Charter), Xfinity Mobile (Comcast), U.S. Cellular, Google Fi and Visible.
