Begala remarked, "God bless Donald Trump Jr".

Other candidates onstage also seemed to want to move on from Ukraine, despite Biden's position as one of the campaign's front-runners. "[Trump is] going after me because he knows if I get the nomination I will beat him like a drum".

Giuliani was referencing Trump's 2016 call for Russian Federation to find Hillary Clinton's deleted emails, and his call for Ukraine and China to investigate the Bidens.

Asked about whether he believed he had also made a misjudgment regarding his son's business dealings while vice president or if Hunter's choices back then were okay, even if they did nothing illegal, the elder Biden shrugged off the question.

He replied (watch here from 1:30 onwards): "Look, my son did nothing wrong".

"I know I did nothing wrong at all".

In 2014, then-Vice President Joe Biden was at the forefront of American diplomatic efforts to support Ukraine's fragile democratic government as it sought to fend off Russian aggression and root out corruption. "That's what we should be focusing on".

On three occasions, Trump has invited the heads of foreign governments and other foreigners to be engaged in trying to alter USA elections, Biden said.

He noted President George Washington warned of the danger of foreign interference in USA affairs.

Hunter has vowed to not serve on the boards of foreign-owned corporations if his father is elected president.

Biden was likely referring to Washington's farewell address.

'Look, my son's statement speaks for itself.

"I did my job", Biden said.

"I never discussed a single thing with my son about anything having to do with Ukraine", Biden maintained, including when Hunter was the attorney general of Delaware. "No one has indicated I have". We've always kept everything separate. Biden responded by contradicting his son's admission of "poor judgment" in an obvious attempt at damage control. "I'm proud of the judgment he made", Biden said. He added that he's "proud" of what his son had to say. Let's focus on this. The fact of the matter is that this is about Trump's corruption.

"I made a mistake, in retrospect, as it related to creating any perception that it was wrong, and so, therefore, I'm taking it off the table", he said in the interview. "I think that it was poor judgment on my part". I hope that he is impeached.

The morning before the debate, Hunter Biden appeared on Good Morning America to discuss his foreign business dealings.
