Porsche Taycan 4S: Lower-priced version might offer longest range

2020 Porsche Taycan 4S

Porsche Taycan 4S expands the range with a cheaper option

The Taycan 4S has six-piston fixed-calipers in red on the front axle and four-piston calipers in red on the rear axle, with internally vented cast iron brake rotors.

But there's an enhanced version of the Turbo 4S too - the 571PS Performance Plus.

Customers who settle for the regular battery pack have 429 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque at their disposal, though the hp figure grows to 522 with launch control engaged. And being Porsches, they weren't exactly cheap: the Taycan Turbo starts at $150,900 and the Turbo S begins at $185,000.

The base Performance battery is a single-deck battery with 79.2 kWh with the auto offering 390 kW of power. The maximum charging capacity (peak) is 225 kW (Performance Battery) or 270 kW (Performance Battery Plus). The integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time. As long as the battery is preheated and the state of charge is below 20 percent, both packs should reach 80 percent after 22.5 minutes connected to an 800V DC fast charger. Additionally included will be 3 years' access to IONITY and the Porsche Charging Service which will allow roaming access to a network of different charge point operators.

Indeed, the 4S, even with its smaller rear motor than the Turbo-badged models, retains a very rear-biased setup. Its altered front end, side sills, and black rear diffuser differentiate the 4S from greater Taycans, but maintain a similarly low drag coefficient of 0.22, maximizing efficiency. Dynamic LED lights remain standard fitment. As with the Taycan Turbo S and Taycan Turbo, the Taycan 4S can be specified with an entirely leather-free interior, with upholstery made of recyclable material. It uses a 300-amp inverter motor at the front and a 600-amp motor at the rear, suggesting the balance we were impressed by in the Turbo S should be carried over into the lesser-powered vehicle to at least some degree. Interiors made from innovative recycled materials underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports auto. The interior comes with a partial leather finish, while all the models get the futuristic digital displays. Starting from £83,367, it seems no less than a bargain when stacked up against the Turbo and Turbo S, with £32,491 sitting between it and the Turbo, and a staggering £55,459 with the Turbo S. Order books open today, and first deliveries are expected in January 2020. The Taycan 4S is available with two battery specifications for varying charge capacity and performance, the Performance battery and the Performance Plus.
