US President Donald Trump, under pressure as Democrats pursue an impeachment inquiry against him, has lashed out at the top Democrat in Congress, saying House Speaker Nancy Pelosi could be guilty of treason.

Trump is accused of pushing Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to investigate Biden, the possible Democratic 2020 presidential nominee, in return for $400 million in military aid. "They finally convinced her to impeach the president", McConnell says directly to the camera in a 17-second video. "We will continue to ask them because the American people have a right to know whether or not the vice president of the United States or his family profited from his position", he said.

Trump had previously said he wanted to meet his accuser after the complaint prompted the House to launch an impeachment inquiry into the president.

Most Republicans in the US Senate have taken the path of least resistance - staying silent - as they grapple with President Donald Trump's swirling impeachment firestorm.

While talking to members of the conservative Federalist Society, McConnell said the Senate's process of confirming judges "means whatever the Senate thinks at any given time".

There's no evidence that the former vice president received any money from China, and a lawyer for Hunter Biden has pushed back on Trump's characterization, calling it "a gross misrepresentation". And so long as impeachment remains nothing more than the Democrats' second attempt at a coup - a narrative meant exclusively to boost their election prospects in 2020 - it will plainly be political theater at its cheapest and most craven. That person, described as an intelligence official, has talked to Michael Atkinson, the inspector general for intelligence matters, ABC News reports. While he has yet to speak to many senators on the issue, Trump said, "I believe the senators look at this as a hoax".

Democrats counter that House Republicans are obsessing over process, rather than the underlying issue of the president's request to Ukraine to investigate the Bidens. Mitt Romney, one of your colleagues called it appalling.

"As you will see from the extensive text messages I am providing, which convey a sense of real-time dialogue with several different actors, Vice President Biden was never a topic of discussion" during negotiations with Ukraine, Volker testified.

The committee has scheduled depositions with State Department officials next week.

Romney's most likely role could be behind the scenes, as a center for other moderate Republican senators, a kind of caucus of the concerned, Galen said. He also provided the committee with some of the information he obtained in his investigation.
