Redskins Name Bill Callahan As Head Coach

Washington Redskins coach Jay Gruden fired

Jay Gruden out as Washington Redskins head coach

After a miserable start to their season, the front office of the Washington Redskins chose to fire head coach Jay Gruden.

Gruden was relieved of his duties after Sunday's 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots, which dropped Washington's record to 0-5 this season.

Though Snyder had been more appreciative of Gruden than many of his other head coaches, the team's owner has been described as increasingly frustrated over Gruden's inability to get back to the playoffs after winning the NFC East in 2015. While there are exceptions, an interim choice rarely works out for the long-term, in part because the players know the coach is just for the short-term and no one can hold them truly accountable.

Black Monday came early for Jay Gruden. "Moving forward we are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans and alumni a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond".

Gruden, who went 35-49-1 with the Redskins, only made the playoffs once while in Washington. In March 2017, Gruden signed a two-year contract extension that was expected to take him through the 2020 season.

"Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility", the Redskins said in a statement. The Redskins were 4-12 in 2014, Gruden's first season.

Washington has the fifth-worst offense in the National Football League, in terms of yards per game. The Redskins have been a total disaster this season and are cycling through quarterbacks.

"Under Bill's leadership, the programs he's going to put in, the discipline and execution, we believe we're giving him the best opportunity to beat the Miami Dolphins, and the rest of the year", Allen said.
