A spokesman for Bahamas Power and Light told ZNS that there was a blackout in New Providence, the archipelago's most populous island.

The Bahamas archipelago is no stranger to hurricanes.

The hurricane, which was downgraded late Monday morning to Category 4 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson Wind Scale, packed maximum sustained winds of 145 miles per hour (240 kph), the NHC said.

Forecasters say the storm is most likely going to move from the Bahamas Tuesday morning and will curve to the northeast, parallel the US seaboard.

The President did speak to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday. Dorian is expected to affect the SC coast Wednesday or Thursday.

"Daily, hourly", Gaynor said.

Nine counties in Florida have issued mandatory evacuations.

States of emergency are in effect for all of Florida, North Carolina and SC.

Though the storm has stalled over the Bahamas, it's "dangerously" near the United States east coast, with over one million residents from Florida, Georgia and SC being evacuated.
