"I was appalled to learn that Jeffrey Epstein was found dead early this morning from an apparent suicide while in federal custody", Barr said in a statement.

Epstein, on August 10, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan and later died at a nearby hospital, reportedly due to an apparent suicide.

Julie K. Brown, the Herald investigative reporter whose reporting led to the case being reopened, said she was surprised at Epstein's death.

The medical examiner's determination is pending further information, Dr. Barbara Sampson, chief medical examiner of the City of NY, said in a press release.

The billionaire was found unconscious in his jail cell with marks on his neck in late July, and prison officials were investigating the incident as a possible suicide attempt. But he had been taken off the suicide watch at the end of July, said the person, who wasn't authorized to discuss jail operations publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

At the time of his death, Epstein was being held without bail and faced up to 45 years in prison on federal sex trafficking and conspiracy charges unsealed last month.

Federal prosecutors in NY reopened the probe after investigative reporting by The Miami Herald stirred outrage over that plea bargain.

Sampson said having a private pathologist observe an autopsy is a routine practice. The medical examiner's office in Manhattan confirmed Epstein's death.

The case against Alkisi was dropped after he pleaded guilty to an immigration violation and was sentenced to 20 months in prison.

Epstein's alleged suicide comes after a slew of once-sealed documents named prominent politicians, all of whom have denied the accusations, in connection with the Epstein scandal.

"It does not appear that all the proper precautions were taken, " Turra attorney Edwin Jacobs Jr. told the paper.

The details of how Jeffrey Epstein died in his Manhattan jail cell over the weekend have yet to be released, but medical officials have performed an autopsy on the high-profile inmate accused of sexually abusing underage girls and paying them hundreds of dollars in cash for massages.
