Rashford says United's fitness is far better than it was at this stage last summer

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will need more time to adjust to their more central roles in attack, after the sale of Romelu Lukaku, but both were on target and Solksjaer was particularly pleased to see Martial score a poachers' goal from close-range centrally.

"Football is won and lost in the boxes".

"We made four mistakes, and they put them away", he said. "At the same time, it was nowhere near a 4-0".

"Obviously everyone would like to start in a better way but we have to face the reality and become stronger from it".

"You've just got to go out and do the same".

"He's going to be a fantastic player for the club, I believe".

Real Madrid would like to sign Pogba yet as the domestic window has closed it seems unlikely he could move to the club despite the Spanish market being open until 2 September as United would be unable to sign a suitable replacement.

But while the performance at Old Trafford was by no means as impressive as the result, there were a few key indicators that he is on the right track.

"There were lots and lots of elements to the game that I liked, there were four or five elements that I didn't like and they were fatal for us".

"But we can't. I'm not going to complain too much about that - I want to work".

The statement was made before Maguire took to the pitch at Old Trafford against Chelsea, where he impressed United fans as well as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Yet he feels there is still plenty more to come from United as the season progresses.

"I can't drag people out of the medical room, whether they're experienced or not", said Lampard after his first competitive game as Chelsea boss.

That said, the way Chelsea capitulated in the second half will be a worry for Lampard and even when Rudiger and Kante are fully fit, who starts at center back?

"For massive parts of the game we didn't allow them to do that. We hit the woodwork, poor decisions in the final third when we should be able to get shots away, we should be in the lead at half-time", he said.

"We know that we can improve".

"All the boys, they train to play for the Chelsea first team since they were young and now we have a massive opportunity to create a fantastic group, to learn from every game. We took risks but that's the way here, you've got to go for it, risk and reward".
