President Trump, who spoke to the Swedish prime minister on Rocky's behalf after being reached out to by Kanye West, tweeted on Friday (August 2) about the rapper's release. Rocky, his bodyguard and his entourage were touring Stockholm.
Mayers, David Rispers Jr and Bladimir Corniel deny beating 19-year-old Mustafa Jafari outside a fast-food restaurant in central Stockholm on 30 June.
"The three should be convicted of assault according to my description of events", Suneson said, adding that previous sentences for such crimes ranged between six to 10 months in jail.
CNN reported Friday that Robert C. O'Brien, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, wrote a letter to to Swedish prosecutors a few days before Mayers' release, requesting the "immediate humanitarian release" of Mayers and two other men who were being detained.
As for Trump's relation to the case, the president has spent a considerable amount of time publicizing the case and calling for Swedish authorities to free Mayers.
The Swedish prosecutor, however, rebuffed his plea and noted that it is only up to the court to decide whether somebody can be released from jail.
"We have three people who throw out punches and kicks against a person who is lying down", he said.
Sweden's justice system is ranked among the world's most respected, but the rapper's arrest and weekslong detention without charges have sparked an outcry in the United States. Jovicic has also said there was no evidence of the bottle hitting him.
