"I haven't played as well, but with potential it could have been as great".

Loud, proud and thrilled to the core.

"You can have that great round and that day where everything goes right", said Holmes. And then you come and play in front of them, it definitely hit me like a ton of bricks today.

"You just have to accept the conditions over here and not get too greedy and go after some pins", Holmes said. Close behind: Shane Lowry (+650) and Justin Rose (+750). "I had a word with them and hopefully they take my comments seriously".

Equalling the course record 65 on the newly-adapted Dunluce Links, it was a special round at a special time.

After the pressure of so-often being touted as an Open contender only to fall just short, like in 2010 when he was second and in 2013 at Muirfield when he looked set to win before falling back, Westwood says she makes his rounds more fun.

"I had a long trip to Thailand [for a family holiday before the Open] and then I was trying to get ready for this event, to play this event".

"It's unusual saying that standing here and having had a bit of success and won this championship before, and just to be battling to make the cut". And unfortunately, I've only had a chance to win one of them (this year) and was able to do it. You could see on the back nine, if I'd got that momentum a little bit yesterday and I went with it today, that was what I was planning to do all week.

"Part of me is very disappointed not to be here for the weekend", McIlroy told Sky TV after the end of the second round.

McIlroy was asked how he spent his Thursday night after the disastrous 79. When he missed that tiny putt on Calamity, the raw emotion, disappointment and frustration, it seemed, had made even the man himself forget what true greatness he was capable of on Friday afternoon. "I just want some time off just to get away from it", said Woods, who plans to return for the FedEx Cup playoffs next month.

"Is it just a lost cause?" This event and the people that have come out to support this event, it means a lot to this whole island economically and really just from a showcasing of this unbelievable place.

"I showed the real Rory McIlroy and the golf that I can play".

While Rory McIlroy has a mountain to climb to make the cut after an eight over par first round.

Boy did they do that. Shane Lowry and J.B. Holmes.

CEO Martin Slumbers said a year ago that there had been an ongoing discussion about the CT limits on a driver, and what happens to it when it wears - something they have been considering for a while.

"It just happened two days early".

"I don't get back home as often as I used to (and) it's hard to feel that support from your home people, I guess, but to have that many people out there following me, supporting me, cheering my name, it meant the world to me".

A crowd of people was nearly tumbling down the wide dune path, in the opposite direction to me.
