Iran urges Europe to take 'effective' steps to save nuclear deal

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday reiterated that Tehran was willing to negotiate on the condition that the United States lifted sanctions and returned to the nuclear deal.

EU Foreign Affairs High Representative Federica Mogherini also said parties planned on empowering a special trade vehicle created to bypass USA sanctions "to have Iran fully compliant with its nuclear commitments, as it has been since the beginning until a few weeks ago". "There is a serious difference between doing something and announcing your willingness", Iranian state TV quoted him as saying.

When Donald Trump campaigned for the US presidency in 2016, he would frequently attack the JCPOA as Obama's folly.

For many years, Shi'ite-led Iran and its US -backed Sunni Gulf Arab rivals have been locked in proxy battles for predominance within the Middle East, from Syria to Yemen.

"Iran doesn't recognise dual nationality, so for them she is Iranian, which is why consular access has not been permitted", he added.

Iranian officials haven't said anything publicly about the Riah.

Some might hope that a deal with Trump would mean a deal with the United States itself, as Trump owns the Republican Party and can bring it along to reconcile with Iran in the same way that Nixon reconciled with China. But "it can be reversed within hours", Zarif told the channel, adding: "We are not about to develop nuclear weapons".

Chinese Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said on Tuesday that USA should stop exerting pressure on Iran and blamed Washington for causing the current tensions.

The governments and leaders of the UK, France and Germany made a joint statement, asking the US and Iran to restore the dialogue for the sake of stopping the escalation over the nuclear deal.

Europe hopes to use a special trading mechanism called INSTEX to enable businesses to deal with Iran without using the United States dollar or financial system, thereby helping the Iranian economy while avoiding Washington's sanctions.

"Apparently, there are some in Europe who won't wake up until Iranian nuclear missiles land on European soil".

"The Europeans claim that they want to salvage the deal, but we haven't seen them ready for investment to do so", Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif told reporters as he landed in NY to participate in a United Nations economic development forum on Monday.

"Following the fearless work of our Royal Navy in the Persian Gulf we will work with partners to maintain the right of commercial ships to go about their rightful business", he said.

Under the deal, Iran agreed to curb its atomic nuclear program in return for relief from crippling sanctions.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that progress has been made with Iran, despite Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei having warned that Tehran would continue developing its nuclear program in violation with the 2015 deal with the six world powers. Before the European Union joined the its sanctions regime in 2012, the EU countries bought a third of Iran's oil output.

Iran has already implemented the first and second phases of its actions in reducing its JCPOA commitments by increasing the stockpile of enriched uranium above the 300kg outlined by the JCPOA and has increasing the level of uranium enrichment above the 3.67% level. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on June 24 that sanctions against Zarif would come later that week.
