When the final whistle blew on July 7, the Americans basked in the triumph of their victory over the Netherlands with a score of 2-0.

For the tournament, striker Alex Morgan tied for the lead with six goals. The U.S. also has Megan Rapinoe, who has scored five goals in the tournament and is expected to play in the match despite suffering a hamstring injury in the match against France. Goalie Alyssa Naeher also deserves credit for stopping a key England penalty kick that could've been the game's equalizer.

Men's soccer also has by far many more viewers than women's soccer. The star striker appeared to pretend to sip tea after scoring a go-ahead goal against England.

Trump responded in a series of tweets, saying he would be inviting the team win or lose, while Ali Krieger stood by her teammate's decision and joined her in her protest.

It was a hard-fought battle between the US and the Netherlands.

The USWNT made history on Sunday, winning their fourth Women's World Cup by defeating the Netherlands 2-0.

"Of course we are European champions but we want to have more and that we are standing in the final now at the World Cup, at the highest level in women´s soccer, that´s fantastic, that´s unbelievable", said the midfielder Sherida Spitse. The Netherlands haven't defeated the US since 1991.

After the match, fans chanted "F-- Trump!"

While the United States defeated hosts France in the quarterfinals before going past England in the semis, the Netherlands defeated Italy in the quarters and then brought down Sweden in the semis.

It has been the summer of Megan Rapinoe.

The USWNT came into this tournament with one goal and one goal only: to lift the trophy. The over-under for total goals scored is 2.5.

Holland captain Sari Van Veenendaal, the Arsenal goalkeeper, added: "The USA have great strikers, but we know what to expect and have a great striker too in Vivianne Miedema".

For much of the first half, the Americans appeared to struggle with compactness of the Dutch. This is the first time they have won back-to-back titles.

Overall, the USA haven't lost a match since losing to France, 3-1, in an worldwide friendly in January.

They become the second team to win the competition twice in a row, matching the feat of 2003 and 2007 champions Germany. Both times during the SheBelieves Cup.

Colin Kaepernick, the NFL quarterback who took his team to the Super Bowl but has been out of the league for three years having knelt during the American anthem, never got another chance to "win first before he talks".

But the men today - some members of the women's team have blasted the decision to contest the Gold Cup final on the same day as the women's World Cup final - take a back seat to the doings in Europe.
