Biden: I wasn't ready for Kamala Harris to attack me that way

Kamala Harris Labels Trump a 'Predator Living in the White House'

Biden says he "wasn't prepared" for debate attacks from Harris

Harris notably accused Biden, a former senator from DE, of opposing the busing of black students to schools in white neighborhoods during the 1970s as part of efforts to desegregate schools.

"I think it'd be great to have a female VP", Biden told CNN's Chris Cuomo in an interview Friday, according to HuffPost. Harris' online store generated almost $500,000, including from sales of 1,400 "That Little Girl Was Me" T-shirts, the campaign said.

The senator's debate performance also gave Harris a big boost in the latest polls, vaulting her into second place behind Biden in some of the surveys. She said that although she now supports voluntary busing, it was wrong to oppose it in the 1960s and 1970s when "there were forces and individuals and supposed leaders in our country who actively worked against the integration of schools based on race".

"I think of busing as being in the toolbox of what is available and what can be used for the goal of desegregating America's schools", Harris told reporters at a picnic. It would be so much easier, and he'd come across infinitely more sympathetic, if he would say something such as: "Based on what we knew then, I and a lot of good Democrats, including African Americans, supported X. But times change and we can recognize unintended consequences of some of those positions".

But Biden also seemed anxious to move beyond busing and other explorations of his lengthy public record, saying it could easily be distorted in the short sound-bites of a presidential debate.

Asked by CNN why he did not push back against the criticisms as aggressively as he is now, Biden said, "What I didn't want to do was get into that scrum".

Joe Biden's first debate for the Democratic primary wasn't his shining moment.

"I get all this information about other people's past and what they've done and not done, and, you know, I'm just not going to go there", he said.

Biden's son Beau, who died of brain cancer in 2015, served as Delaware's attorney general at the same time that Harris was serving as California's attorney general. So I will tell you that on this subject, it can not be an intellectual debate among Democrats. "Look, it's center-left", he said.

Unlike Trump, who dragooned the acting secretary of defense and military leaders onto the stage as part of his over-produced air show, the Democrats went to where Americans live and joined them in their hometown, charming celebrations. "He's the bully I've always stood up to".

During the interview, Biden noted that more moderate Democrats had won in swing districts across the country, helping return control of the U.S. House of Representatives back to the party in 2018.
