Pelicans take Zion Williamson with No. 1 pick in NBA draft

NEW YORK NEW YORK- JUNE 19 Goga Bitadze speaks to the media ahead of the 2019 NBA Draft at the Grand Hyatt New York

Georgian big man Goga Bitadze is expected to be a mid-first-round pick in Thursday's NBA draft. More

Murray State's Ja Morant was the second player off the board and will begin his professional career with the Memphis Grizzlies. Those first round picks were used to select Jaxson Hayes, who will pair with Williamson in a remarkably athletic frontcourt, and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.

RJ Barrett then made it two Duke freshmen within the top-three picks when the New York Knicks took the guard who actually edged out Williamson to lead the Atlantic Coast Conference in scoring.

Several other Canadians were also thought to be candidates to go later in the draft.

A record six Canucks were selected Thursday night with four being taken in the first round, alone.

Coming off a 17-win season, the New York Knicks picked third in the first round of tonight's NBA Draft.

The previous record for Canadians in the first round was set in 2014 when Andrew Wiggins (1st overall), Nik Stauskas (8th overall) and Tyler Ennis (18th overall) all heard their names called by Commissioner Adam Silver.

Anthony Bennett of Brampton, Ont., also went first overall to the Cavaliers in 2013.

With that, Barrett and second-round pick Ignas Brazdeikis were officially welcomed to the Big Apple.

Here's another illogical scenario that happened last night: The Bucks owned the No. 30 pick. Zion Williamson was less certain.

Of course, the players will say they don't care.

The Cam Fam is moving to Atlanta as Cam Reddish has been selected by the Atlanta Hawks with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

His assault on the rims made him a favorite of college basketball fans, but his game is more than just dunks. Second-year forward John Collins boosted his averages to 19.5 points and 9.8 rebounds by season's end, his high-wire inside act complemented by the outside shooting of All-Rookie Second Team forward Kevin Huerter (9.7 ppg, 38.5 percent on 385 3-point attempts).

The New Orleans Pelicans shook the National Basketball Association world at its very core by trading away former franchise cornerstone, Anthony Davis, to the Los Angeles Lakers. While the Knicks listened to potential trade offers, Perry said they never came close to trading the pick.
