The third and likely final meeting between MI and MSU this season tips off today at 3:30 pm EST / 12:30 pm PST on CBS. Winston, the Big Ten player of the year, has scored 50 points in the two victories over MI this season.
While the Badgers stumbled at the start, the 6-foot-7 Goins swished his first three 3-point attempts in the first 6 minutes of the game.
CREATING OFFENSE: Winston has either made or assisted on 55 percent of all Michigan State field goals over the last five games.
Michigan State forward Kyle Ahrens injured his left ankle and was taken off the court on a stretcher Sunday, and his status was uncertain as the No. 6 Spartans headed to the NCAA Tournament.
Out went Livers, Teske, Jordan Poole and Ignas Brazdeikis. The Spartans were awarded a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament and will face Bradley in the second round on Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa. Kind of like Michigan State did on February 24 in Ann Arbor.
When asked what part of Winston's game keeps him up at night, Michigan Assistant Coach Luke Yaklich, who was instrumental in the Wolverines' defensive improvement over the last two years, said it's "when he's in uniform".
If Michigan advances, it would play the victor of No. 7 Nevada and No. 10 Florida.
Georgia State 73, Texas-Arlington 64: Malik Benlevi hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points, and Georgia State advanced to a second straight NCAA Tournament with a victory over Texas-Arlington in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament final.
Brazdeikas then missed a pull-up jumper that got tipped by Aaron Henry with 14 seconds to play. Guard Kyle Ahrens suffered a leg injury in Sunday's win against MI but a team spokesman said X-Rays were negative.
He expects to have an MRI once the softball-sized swelling goes down.
Ahrens returned to the sideline on crutches with just over 14 minutes left on the game.
Michigan: The Wolverines have their sights set on another big NCAA run after losing to Villanova in the championship game previous year. "Michigan State is not going away as being a force in the Big Ten".
