‘Enormous’ Grassroots Movement Behind Rep. Omar Weakened Democratic Rebuke

US House Democrats Struggling over Rebuke to Lawmaker for Israel Comments

Democrats’ anti-hate resolution won’t mention Ilhan Omar, Pelosi says

All 23 votes against the resolution came from Republican representatives, many of whom did so on grounds that the resolution did not mention Omar by name.

I don't think she's a bigot but, as with other sensitive topics, its not hard to sound like one when you make strong criticisms in such touchy areas as USA policy toward Israel.

Republicans, even those who voted for the resolution, criticized that it had been expanded to take the focus off anti-Semitism - and Omar. "The whole episode from the perspective of the Democrats was an absolute disgrace, and they have become a party that is now enabling and abiding by anti-Semitism, and that is extremely risky".

"I thought yesterday's vote by the House was disgraceful", Trump told reporters at the White House.

The resolution was prompted by comments from Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar, an American refugee of Somali background, after she said she was being pressured to pledge "allegiance" to Israel.

"I probably don't agree with her a lot about what she feels about Israel and Palestine, but I don't know why this has to be seen as anti-Semitic", Maher said at the time. Gold said the pressure for a resolution against Omar came from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), "which claims to be a civil rights organization while actually being involved in spying on activists in place like Ferguson [Missouri], is directly involved in Islamophobic trainings in cities and for police forces and is behind numerous times that United States police forces are sent over to Israel to train with the Israeli military".

Reacting to his comments on CNN, Daily Beast editor Jackie Kucinich ran through Trump's long history of bigotry, calling his condemnation of Omar "shameless". "I find that to be problematic and I am not alone", Omar tweeted.

In an interview on NBC News' "Meet the Press", Cheney described the House resolution as "clearly an effort to actually protect Ilhan Omar, to cover up her bigotry and anti-Semitism by refusing to name her". However, she noted that "in the last couple years, more and more, Democrats are moving away from support for Israel", citing polls showing Democrats sympathize more with the Palestinians than the Israelis.

"Let's be honest, we are here today because of rhetoric said by one member or this chamber, again and again and again", said Rep.

According to Sarsour on Friday, she and her fellow organizers worked behind the scenes to change the original intent of the non-binding resolution by the end of the week.

Democrats are betting that the vote on the resolution will put the issue to bed.

"She in 2017 went on a trip to Israel, and we have a picture of her smiling with [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu that he tweeted out", she said, "a war criminal who has just built an alliance with the Jewish KKK, which Kamala has not condemned". We don't want anybody to get away with murder because they are polished. With two Muslim women in Congress, she noted, "here is a group of people that we want to make sure that they have the dignity that you want everybody else to have". "We need to stay vigilant".
