Marner's agent says he'll negotiate with Maple Leafs at end of season

Leafs re-sign Auston Matthews to five-year contract

Auston Matthews, Maple Leafs agree to five-year contract extension through 2024 season

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced today that the club has agreed to terms with forward Auston Matthews on a five-year contract extension.

Toronto coach Mike Babcock has no doubts it will get done.

I wouldn't be surprised if Marner, who's from Markham, Ont., asks for the same amount of money as Matthews, arguing that they've put up very similar point totals since entering the league together in 2016-17, even though Marner has played almost 30 more games than his teammate.

It shouldn't be lost on anyone that one of the reasons Ferris provided Leafs management for cutting off negotiations earlier this season was wanting to limit the distractions for Marner.

Like Matthews was before Tuesday, the Calgary Flames youngster is set to become a restricted free agent this summer.

Matthews opened his NHL account against the Sens on October 12, 2016 at Ottawa where he set a league record for goals scored in an NHL debut (4). "Mitch is a lifetime Leaf".

"At this age, I like people who are life-long learners, trying to get better no matter what day of their life".

It was the fourth win in five games for a resurgent Toronto team, whose January woes seem to be turning into a February festival despite the best efforts of the spunky Senators, who save their best for the Leafs.

Ottawa has contract questions of its own.

Matthews is now slated to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2024 when he'll still only be approaching his 27th birthday.

Senators owner Eugene Melnyk says he is prepared to open his wallet.

The Battle of Ontario was a mismatch looking at the numbers. But on Wednesday morning, he was playing some defence with the media. But Ottawa had won six of its last seven visits to Scotiabank Arena. Craig Anderson made 25 saves. He has only played 38 of Toronto's 52 regular-season games due to injury. The addition of Muzzin has fortified the blue line, also helping the Leafs turn the corner and start stringing wins together. As for Ferris, he insists that when it comes to putting pen to paper, the ball is in the Maple Leafs' court.

Internationally, Matthews has represented the United States at the 2016 IIHF World Championship and registered nine points (6 goals, 3 assists) in 10 games to earn a Top 3 Player on Team recognition.

Ottawa outshot Toronto 16-12 in the second period and 17-7 in the third.

Matthews put the Leafs back in the lead, dragging the puck past a sliding defenceman only to lose the handle.

Marner was the provider again, outwaiting defenceman Ben Harpur to fire a ideal pass for Tavares to tap-in for his 32nd of the season at 18:20. Newly acquired Maple Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin played his 500th National Hockey League game.

Bob McKenzie of TSN has the year-by-year breakdown of the Matthews deal. A video tribute during the first period drew a standing ovation from the crowd of 19,264.

Senators: Host Anaheim on Thursday night.

The Leafs next head out for a six-game road trip that will take them to Montreal, New York (Rangers), Colorado, Las Vegas, Arizona and St. Louis.
