MSNBC host Rachel Maddow asked Ocasio-Cortez to respond to a primetime address President Donald Trump gave last month about the situation at the USA southern border, prompting her to castigate the president for requesting funding for ICE.
After Democrats won the House majority in November, Ocasio-Cortez emerged as an outspoken advocate for combating climate change and pushed for the select committee to be focused on formulating a Green New Deal that would move the country toward 100 percent renewable electricity over the next 10 years.
"The public is much more aware of the challenge that we face and that is a good thing", Pelosi, a California Democrat, said. This includes the Working Families Party, People's Action, Center for Popular Democracy, Justice First, Green For All, 350.org, CREDO Action, the Sunrise Movement and Justice Democrats.
Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado, said at a climate change hearing in the House natural resources committee on Wednesday that the policy was akin to a "Soviet five-year plan".
"Not only will we not agree to fund [ICE], but we are here to say that an agency like ICE, which repeatedly and systematically violates human rights, does not deserve a dime", she continued.
Several Democratic presidential hopefuls have embraced the idea of a Green New Deal without saying exactly what it means.
The panel will be chaired by Rep. Kathy Castor of Florida, who was chosen in December. These included establishing an accelerated shift away from fossil fuels in the economy, establishing job guarantees for all American and creating national health care coverage.
"We welcome the enthusiasm that is there with the Green New Deal", Pelosi said Thursday at a news conference. She said she also wants to hear from the new climate committee, which she said will "spearhead Democrats" work' on climate issues.
The freshman lawmaker is teaming up with veteran Sen.
Hours earlier, Pelosi said she had not yet read the Green New Deal.
Markey, a veteran Congressman from MA, introduced sweeping climate change legislation a decade ago, which passed in the House but was blocked in the Senate. Will all of the expertise that goes into a Green New Deal eventually include proofreaders?
President Donald Trump has scrapped Obama's plan.
The Green New Deal proposal is named after President Franklin Roosevelt's sweeping "New Deal" economic and labor reforms during the Great Depression. Trump, who has expressed doubts about climate change, also is likely to oppose it.
The plan has already gathered 60 co-sponsors in the House and has prompted strong opposition from Republicans and industry leaders who say it's technologically impossible and will costs tens of trillions of dollars.
