Trump shouldn't declare emergency to build border wall

President Trump: Democrats do nothing to secure border, national emergency still possible

It's still an open question whether Trump caved to Democrats pressure on reopening the government last month because he wanted the SOTU so badly or whether the SOTU is happening because he retreated to avoid public anger.

Millions of Americans are expected to watch the address on television, giving the Republican president his biggest opportunity to date to explain why he believes a barrier is needed on the U.S. southern border with Mexico.

Just two days later, Trump signed a bill to bring a (temporary) end to the 35-day shutdown, and the following week, Pelosi extended an invitation for Trump to address Congress on February 5.

When Mr Trump takes centre stage in the chamber of the House of Representatives for the big speech, sitting behind him over his shoulder will be his main congressional adversary, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, who became House Speaker after her party won control of the chamber in November's elections. That's not to make light of the bullying Joshua has experienced, but it does emphasize where the Trumps' real concerns lie: squarely with themselves.

Pelosi said there would not be any money for the border wall in the legislation being negotiated by a bipartisan committee.

For instance, when President Trump announced that black unemployment is the lowest ever recorded, the Democrats couldn't even wipe the contempt off their faces for a second to acknowledge the good news.

While the government is funded until February 15, the conference committee has only a few days left to formulate an agreement on border security spending.

The President has deplored the bipartisan and bicameral budget negotiations taking place amid the short-term spending bill as a "waste of time" and indicated in recent days that he is once again leaning toward taking executive action to build a wall on the US-Mexico border.

Here are some things to look for when President Trump delivers his 2019 State of the Union address tonight.

Members of the migrant caravan remain at the El Barretal shelter in Tijuana, Mexico, 08 December 2018.

"This year's guests come from all different walks of life, and each has an incredible story to tell", the White House wrote in a statement.

Mr Trump tweeted: "I see Schumer is already criticizing my State of the Union speech, even though he hasn't seen it yet". The parents added that the bullying started when Donald Trump began running for office. But, the state of the Trump economy is failing America's middle class.

Conway says Trump will also meet with guests the White House has invited to sit with first lady Melania Trump during the speech. The President stopped by to give a pep talk, as well.

But Trump in recent days has talked about the tradition and stature the State of the Union carries, and he mostly stuck to his prepared remarks during his first official SOTU previous year and a speech to a joint session of Congress in 2017.

President Donald Trump is expected to call for optimism and unity in his State of the Union address, but skeptics are likely to question whether he can be successful in pursuing such a reset after two years of bitter partisanship and personal attacks.
