As of Tuesday (January 22), he is still in police custody as they investigate potential charges of aggravated rape and drug infractions, the AP reports. Investigators have two days to decide whether to pursue the case or release the men.

The American recording artist has a history of violence, including a felony conviction for the 2009 assault on Rihanna, his girlfriend at the time.

The 29-year-old singer was detained and arrested in Paris, France on Monday to be questioned in relation to the incident, which is said to have taken place on 15 January.

U.S. singer Chris Brown has been arrested in Paris on suspicion of rape. According to French tabloid publication Closer, the woman also alleges she was abused by Brown's bodyguard and a friend of the performer.

A rep and an attorney for Brown did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Brown had been in Paris for Fashion Week, where he attended the Yohji Yamamoto show.

Then in May, an unidentified woman filed a lawsuit against Brown and two others after she said she was allegedly held down and sexually assaulted in the singer's home.

According to reports, Brown must either be released or appear in court within 48 hours.

In 2016, he was arrested in Los Angeles after a woman said he had pointed a gun at her.

Brown, who burst onto the music scene as a teen, won a Grammy Award in 2011 for best R&B album for F.A.M.E. and has nominations for other works.

He counts almost 50 million followers on Instagram, where a picture posted on Sunday showed him meeting fans in Paris.

In 2013, he was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor assault after a man said he was struck by Brown outside a Washington, D.C. hotel.
