Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys had led tributes to Daryl Dragon, the singer and pianist who achieved fame as half of musical duo Captain & Tennille.

Dragon died of renal failure at a hospice in Prescott, Arizona, according to spokesman Harlan Boll. They had a number one hit song in 1975 with "Love Will Keep Us Together".

But while the two enjoyed the success of five albums certified gold or platinum, scoring numerous hits and hosted their own television variety series on ABC in 1976-1977, she felt lonely and isolated from her husband.

Dragon and Tennille were married from 1975 until 2014 and remained close friends after their divorce.

"One fan wrote: "#RIP Daryl Dragon, The Captain, a great musician, keyboard player and friend for over 40 years. "I was at my most creative in my life, when I was with him", Tennille told The Hollywood Reporter.

Dragon and Tennille divorced in 2014 after almost 40 years of marriage, but stayed good friends close.

In 1971, Toni Tennille hired Dragon to play piano for her in the "Mother Earth" musical.

Do you remember listening to The Beach Boys and The Captain and Tennille?

Toni Tennille, his ex-wife and partner in the duo, was there with him, as she had been for decades. And I don't blame him because he came from a very, very hard family and he had a famous but overbearing father.

They performed together in smaller venues while not with The Beach Boys and went on to form the duo Captain and Tennille, eventually signing with A&M Records. The couple, which had been living together, made it official in November of that year.

The son of Oscar-winning composer Carmen Dragon and singer Eloise Dragon, Daryl is survived by his ex-wife Toni, older brother, Doug Dragon, and nieces, Kelly Arbout and Renee Henn.
