A man, 26, was charged with murder Saturday after he was last seen entering the CityLife hotel in Auckland with Millane, who had arrived in New Zealand on November 20 as part of her yearlong backpacking trip across the world. She had been travelling around the world after finishing her studies at the University of Lincoln.
He will remain in custody until Monday morning when he will appear in the Auckland District Court, police said.
Tourist Grace Millane has been missing since Dec 1, and failed to contact her family on her birthday Dec 2.
One of Ms Millane's brothers has paid tribute to his sister, posting a series of photos of himself with her online, captioned with the lyrics to the song You Are My Sunshine.
"The formal identification process will now take place, however based on the evidence we have gathered over the past few days, we expect that this is Grace", said Beard.
He was speaking during the first court appearance of the man accused of her murder.
Detectives said the body was "believed to be Grace" but it has not yet been formally identified.
"A short time ago we located a body that we believe to be Grace".
"It is an unbearable time for the Millane family, and our hearts go out to them, " Beard said. "Any father, any parent in this situation would struggle".
