Last year Baker Mayfield won another Heisman for Oklahoma, which brought the school's total to six players who have won the award-enough to tie Southern California for the second-most winners produced. He beat out Oklahoma's Kyler Murray and West Virginia's Will Grier for the award.
That didn't stop one Ohio State fan from calling out Kirk Herbstreit on Twitter for ESPN's "typical Ohio State and Big Ten disrespect". Jackson won the Heisman that season.
The future pro baseball player was honored with the Davey O'Brien Award on Thursday night at the College Football Awards Show. The past four Maxwell winners and past five Walter Camp winners have all gone on to win the Heisman. As a result, Murray is the fifth Sooner to take home the award, joining Sam Bradford (2008), White (2003, '04) and running back Billy Sims (1978).
The Sooners now have five winners have the Davey O'Brien Award, the most of any school.
Behind Murray, the University of Oklahoma has the top rated offense in the country, averaging over 8 yard per play.
Murray has thrown at least two touchdown passes in 12 of 13 games this season, and has thrown at least three TD passes in 10 contests. Mayfield won the award last season.
But, after an electrifying season that saw Murray eviscerate opposing defenses on his way to becoming a Heisman Trophy finalist, the 21-year-old might be eyeing a more exclusive path.
