The former commander-in-chief was treated for pneumonia and was temporarily placed on a ventilator in 2017.

Only one other USA president, John Adams, had a son who also became president.

Following a failed run for the Senate in 1964, Bush entered the US House of Representatives in 1967, serving two terms, until a second bid for the Senate in 1970 again ended in failure.

Mr Bush and his wife, Barbara Bush, had six children and were married for 73 years - the longest presidential marriage in United States history. She reportedly suffered from congestive heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

During the Second World War, he became the youngest naval pilot at the age of 18 following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbour. As he accepted the Republican Party's nomination for president in 1988, Bush pleaded for a "kinder, gentler nation". Together they served two terms in the White House.
