Rooney scored a record 53 goals in his first 119 worldwide appearances as the spearhead of the so-called "Golden Generation", which included the likes of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham and was criticised for failing to challenge at World Cups and European Championships.

The Football Association has sold more than 20,000 tickets for England's friendly against the United States since former captain Wayne Rooney's one-off worldwide comeback was confirmed, an FA spokesman said yesterday.

Rooney also confirmed that the match against US will be his last for England as he prepares to call time on his global career that started back in 2003. I hope in 10 or 15 years we are sat here for someone like Harry Kane who can go on to get the goal-scoring record. It affects your performance, because you play your best football and put in your best performances when you're enjoying playing. "But I'm not asking people to agree with it".

"He has won everything, done everything and he is a top, top player - when you think of England you think of Wayne Rooney".

Wins his 100th England cap in November 2014 and scores a penalty as England defeat Slovenia in a Euro 2016 qualifier.

"Speaking to the FA, we felt it was right, this was the way the FA wanted to move forward". It will be my last game.

He elaborated: "Of the six managers I played for, while there were a few individual young players, to bring so many through as a group and have that trust in them, he deserves a lot of credit".

After a season back at Everton, former Manchester United striker Rooney secured a move to the U.S.to join D.C. United - whom he helped to the playoffs in his first campaign. The only regret was maybe not having that last game to say thanks to the fans.

"My decision to retire was the right decision", Rooney said.

The striker is the country's all-time leading goalscorer with 53 goals.

Rooney insisted he has no regrets on retiring from global football a year before the World Cup, but admitted even he was surprised at how quickly Southgate's squad matured into contenders to be world champions. A lot of the other managers didn't give the youth an opportunity to express themselves and have an impact.

"When you've had a bad game you don't want to go out for dinner.

I think what is important, as well as that the game is going to go ahead and that I'm going to take part, is that there would be money raised for the children as well in the Wayne Rooney Foundation which is important to me". That's the story of my England career.
