Stars are speaking out following Stan Lee's death.
In 1961, Lee started Marvel Comics with his co-creator Jack Kirby.
Disney bought Marvel Entertainment in 2009, and Lee made cameo appearances in nearly every Marvel movie. He also made sure every creator got credit, including the colorist and letterer. By the 1960's Timely would be known as Marvel Comics.
Lee worked with DC on Just Imagine, a comic book in which he re-imagined some of the publisher's most iconic heroes.
Sadly, those future projects will not include the cameos by Lee that fans had come to expect and love.
As a result, Marvel became a smash success. His work converted Marvel into a comic book juggernaut, and eventually into the multimedia behemoth that has created the highest-grossing superhero movies of all time.
"There will never be another Stan Lee". However, this new transition was not without its trials and tribulations. He sued the company in 2002 for royalties he said he was owed for the first "Spider-Man" movie.
Iron Man, Thor and Doctor Strange would follow - and today, all three heroes have multi-film franchises that rake in hundreds of millions of dollars. His wife of 69 years, Joan, passed away in 2017. According to Bank Rate, Lee's massive wealth was painstakingly built after he worked tirelessly to transform a small publishing house into a giant multimedia corporation.
Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldana also posted an on-set image of Lee, director James Gunn, and herself on-set, and called him an "inspiration and superhero to us all".
Early on, Stan Lee hoped to be a great American author, with designs on writing novels.
While Lee's health has deteriorated significantly over the previous year - he suffered a particularly bad bout of pneumonia at the beginning of 2018 - there's no official word yet on the cause of death.
President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige spoke of Lee's "extraordinary legacy" and the impact he had on his career.
"My father loved all of his fans", his daughter told Hollywood monitor TMZ.
