Legendary Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee has died

Report: Marvel Comics founder Stan Lee dies at 95

He was rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from his Hollywood Home, where he died overnight.

Stan Lee, born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York City on December 28, 1922, is best-known for his involvement in creating popular Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Black Panther, the X-Men and others.

Lee's wife Joan, a British-born hat model who later got into voice acting, passed away in July 2017, due to complications from a stroke.

There has always been debate regarding how responsible both Lee and Kirby were in the creation of these iconic, and very lucrative, characters. Lee started work at Marvel in 1939.

Things turned around in 1998 when Blade made it's successful debut in theaters, with the Wesley Snipes vampire hunter leading the way for other Marvel characters to hit the big screen including X-Men, Spider-Man, Hulk, Daredevil, The Punisher, Fantastic Four and Ghost Rider.

Though Lee doesn't have much to do with the publishing side of Marvel or the company's growing media empire, he received a minimum $1 million a year from the company in perpetuity.

As a result, Marvel became a smash success.

"The beauty of Stan Lee's characters is that they were characters first and superheroes next", Jeff Kline, executive producer of the "Men in Black" animated television series, told The Blade of Toledo, Ohio, in 1998.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige represents something of a super-fan in a global community of followers devoted to Stan Lee - the comicbook creator who died Monday at 95 following complications from a medical emergency.

Lee and Kirby decided that it was time to make a new kind of superhero. He'd had several bouts of illnesses in recent years including a tough fight with pneumonia. He founded The Stan Lee Foundation in 2010 which focused on literacy, education, and the arts.

Lee gave us over six decades of work like The Incredible Hulk and The Amazing Spider-Man - superheroes we could identify with, characters that allowed us to suspend our disbelief because they reacted to freaky situations like you or I might. "To those of us who have been so deeply affected by the humanity of his imagination, the understanding of reaching beyond our potential and the necessity of tapping into our immeasurable imaginations, we thank you and are forever indebted", he said. Lawsuits, court fights and an elder abuse investigation all emerged in the fight over who spoke for the elderly Lee. Lee is survived by one daughter, Joan Celia.
