More than 16 percent of voters to date have Spanish surnames, a higher share than in any previous midterm election.

In terms of turnout of registered voters, though, Democrats were outperforming the GOP with 40.5 percent turnout compared to 39 percent of Republican voters. Turnout during presidential election cycles is typically much higher than for midterms.

Every state is up significantly over 2014, but Texas and Florida are way up thanks to competitive races in each state.

What's unclear is whether the increased turnout of early voting is representative of an increased turnout overall from 2014 or whether voters who voted in 2014 are just choosing to vote earlier.

The deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot is 3 p.m. on Monday, November 5 at Monmouth County's election offices at 300 Halls Mill Road, Freehold.

Voters should bring their ID to the polls with them. Registrar employees will also give out "I Voted" stickers.

With election day Tuesday, turnout at close of business on November 1 stood at 881,715-far higher than the prior high of 702,437 at this point in the 2014 midterm election, and only slightly below the 899,128 ballots cast at this point in the 2012 presidential election. A divided 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel granted an emergency motion sought by voting-rights groups. There are now 30,524 active registered voters in the city and 78,253 in the county. The law requires voters who had moved to the state within 30 days of an election to provide proof they intend to stay.
