"And I assure them, that those responsible will be held accountable for this", he said.

Asked by a reporter whether he thought Saudi Arabia's explanation for Khashoggi's death was credible, Trump said, "I do".

The claim comes a day before Prince Mohammed's high-profile investment summit begins in Riyadh.

"This was an operation that was a rogue operation, this was an operation where individuals ended up exceeding their authorities and responsibilities they had; they made a mistake when they killed Jamal Khashoggi in the consulate and they tried to cover up for it", he said.

According to the report, registration documents showed that the vehicle belonged to the Saudi consulate. Economy Minister Peter Altmaier underlined Monday its position that "we won't at this point approve any further arms exports because we want to know what happened".

This comes as Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin is planning to travel to the Saudi capital Riyadh this week, where he'll meet with senior Saudi officials at an anti-terrorism center run jointly by the USA and Saudi Arabia. A member of the team dressed in Khashoggi's clothes to make it appear as if he had left the consulate. He was part of the hit squad, sent to kill the journalist at the Saudi consulate during a scheduled appointment to get papers for his upcoming wedding. They say they are in possession of audio and video evidence to back up the claim but have not released any proof. Why Saudi Arabia matters to the West Also on Sunday, Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he would reveal the "naked truth" of the matter in parliament on Tuesday.

-3:28 a.m. October 2: A private plane arrives at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport carrying some members of what Turkish media will refer to as a 15-member Saudi "assassination squad", including a man that officials describe as a forensics and "autopsy expert".

While it was the first time that a member of the Turkish government has spoken publicly in detail about the case, Erdogan added little new to the accounts that have already emerged from private briefings by Turkish officials.

Several of Saudi Arabia's regional allies have come out in its support. But the prince himself, protected by his 82-year-old father, King Salman, has been tapped to lead a panel to reform the kingdom's intelligence services, a sign he will remain next in line to the throne. But it was a big first step, it was a good first step.

The official said Kushner - like other members of the administration, including Trump - believes Saudi Arabia should suffer some sort of effect, but said Kushner also believes the U.S. -Saudi relationship "shouldn't be blown up" because of the Khashoggi matter.

President Trump later told The Washington Post, "Their stories are all over the place". Speaking late Saturday after a campaign rally in Nevada, Trump said he needs to learn more about the killing and will be working with Congress on the USA response.

Kushner, Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, has cultivated a personal relationship with Prince Mohammed and urged Trump to act with caution to avoid upsetting a critical strategic and economic relationship, a senior administration official said. On Saturday Riyadh said he was killed in a fistfight in the consulate. When the media reported a few days later that he had been killed there, they called the accusations "baseless".

On Monday, Trump said he had spoken with bin Salman about the investigation into Khashoggi's death, adding that more details will become apparent tonight or tomorrow morning. "Many questions remain unanswered", Peters said.
