The best women's player was Marta, who won for a sixth time but the first since 2011.

Portugal global Ronaldo, who joined Juventus from Real Madrid in the close season, was second in this year's awards with Liverpool's Mohamed Salah in third place.

Ronaldo and Messi have both won the award five times each, but the Portuguese's only rivals to this year's gong are his former Real Madrid team-mate Luka Modric and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

"But of course this is also recognition for all the hard work, for the season that I had for Real Madrid and the national team".

"I would change all my individual trophies for that trophy of World Cup champion", Modric said, reflecting on the 4-2 loss to France in the final in July.

"I'm very pleased to have picked up this award", Modric told Federation Internationale de Football Association after the gala.

With the Best FIFA Football Award ceremony having taken place in London on Monday night, several players were recognised for their contributions to the sport over the past year.

Ronaldo has won each of the last two iterations of the award while earning honors twice when the award was the FIFA Ballon d'Or and one further honour as FIFA World Player of the Year.

It required voters to be more imaginative and not just make the predictable picks of Ronaldo and Messi, who split the previous 10 awards.

Earlier in the evening, Salah had been awarded the FIFA Puskas award for his solo strike in the Merseyside derby against Everton, in which he weaved through the defence to curl the ball into the top corner.

"Of course I would change everything to have won in Russian Federation".

In the FIFA's women's coach of the year award category, Matildas coach Alen Stajcic was pipped by Olympique Lyonnais Feminin boss Reynald Pedros.

Real Madrid's former Chelsea stopper Thibaut Courtois beat off competition from Leicester's Kasper Schmeichel and Tottenham's Hugo Lloris to win the best goalkeeper accolade.
