At UN, Trump calls for global action on drugs

US President Donald Trump on Monday inked his administration's first trade deal with South Korea, which he described as "a historic milestone" and a promise fulfilled to his countrymen.

"The North Koreans view their capability as leverage and I don't think that they want to give it up easily".

Trump said that the meeting would happen "in the not too distant future", not in Singapore but a "location to be determined".

To prepare for that trip, Pompeo offered to meet with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho this week at the U.N. General Assembly in NY, but the North Koreans have still not accepted that meeting.

"A lot of progress" was being made, he said, speaking alongside South Korean President Moon Jae-in in NY.

Slutsky says he hopes to meet while in NY with U.S. Senator Rand Paul, who visited Moscow last month and has encouraged more cooperation with Russia despite increasing layers of U.S. sanctions over Russian interference overseas.

Speculation has soared in recent days that Mr. Kim is demanding upfront sanctions relief or a removal of American forces from South Korea as a precondition before taking any concrete measures to reduce its nuclear and ballistic missile arsenals.

"The United Nations has tremendous potential and that potential is being met, slowly but surely", Trump told the drug meeting attended by UN chief Antonio Guterres.

"In addition to this deal, we have many other deals in the works - reciprocal deals", Trump said.

Le Drian said Monday despite Trump's America first attitude France still wants Trump to join global ceremonies November 11 in Paris marking the end of World War I "to celebrate the sacrifices of American forces".

Sparks are expected to fly Tuesday when Iranian President Hassan Rouhani takes to the rostrum shortly after Mr. Trump.

While Trump has not totally ruled out meeting with Rouhani on the sidelines of the General Assembly, the Iranian president appears in no mood to meet his U.S. counterpart and rejects any comparison with the situation with North Korea.

His national security adviser, John Bolton, said that Trump would stress U.S. defense of its sovereignty in his latest United Nations address on Tuesday.

It's also unclear how the military measures could affect the armistice agreement, which is enforced by the UNC under the command of Army Gen. Vincent Brooks, who also leads U.S. Forces Korea.

In his four-day visit to New York, Trump will deliver major speeches and meet with representatives of a world order that he has so often upended in the past year.

Trump planned to meet later Monday in NY with French President Emmanuel Macron (eh-mahn-yoo-EHL' mah-KROHN').

The president may be known for clashing with the United Nations by pulling the US out of its Human Rights Council and the UNESCO cultural program while ending all funding for the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees.

Trump praised Kim as "very open" and "terrific", despite the glacial pace of progress toward denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.

But the majority of administration officials I'm talking to are much more skeptical.

In meetings with European leaders as well as during the Security Council session, Trump plans to try to make the case that global companies are cutting ties with Iran ahead of the reimposition in five weeks of tough sanctions against Tehran.

Trump was elected promising to address USA opioid addiction.

"I think he's got a couple major possibilities really to help illuminate for the American people what America's place in the world", national security adviser John Bolton told Fox News Channel's "Sunday Morning Futures", previewing Trump's United Nations appearance. "This is one year later, a much different time".

Meetings on the sidelines of the General Assembly often come in rapid succession, a wearying test for even the most experienced foreign policy team.

"This is a brand new agreement", he told reporters.
