Barquin was an accomplished college golfer, becoming the 2018 Big 12 champion and Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year.

The body of Barquin Arozamena was found dead by police by the 9th hole of Coldwater Golf Course in Ames, Iowa on Monday.

22-year-old Collin Daniel Richards has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in her death.

"During a search of the wooded area next to the golf course, officers located a subject who spoke of another individual living in the wooded area who had made statements of having an urge to rape and kill women". An immigrant from Mexico is charged in the July slaying of University of Iowa student Mollie Tibbetts, who vanished while out for a run in the town of Brooklyn.

Huff declined to say whether Richards had attempted to disrobe her. He was found with an illegally long knife during a traffic stop, and he injured a police officer during a scuffle. Officers found Richards with several fresh scratches on his face consistent with fighting, and a deep laceration in his left hand that he tried to hide, it said.

Richards was arrested and is held in Story County jail in lieu of $5 million bail.

Richards faces life in prison if he is convicted.

Meanwhile, fans of the Iowa State football team have all been asked to wear yellow for Saturday's games in Ames against Akron, in honour of Barquin.

That man told investigators Richards had said in recent days that he had "an urge to rape and kill a woman", the complaint said.

The university's women's golf team withdrew from a competition in MI to return home to grieve her death. She recently won an amateur tournament in Europe and competed in the U.S. Women's Open Championship. Even though she completed her eligibility as a golfer, she was remaining in Ames to finish her degree in civil engineering. "We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best and her passion for life".

Barquin, who was ranked No. 69 nationally by Golfweek, ended her career as a Cyclone with a fourth-straight NCAA Regional appearance and earned All-Big 12 Team honours for the third time - the second player in Iowa State's history to do so. "She's a huge part of our family - and, you know, we're broken and we're missing a part of who we are", said Christie Martens, the golf coach of Barquin.

He was released from prison in June after serving about seven months for a probation violation - for threatening to "shoot up" a convenience store in January 2015, the Carroll Daily Times Herald reported.

Court records show that since 2014, Richards had been charged with abusing a former girlfriend, stealing a pickup truck after wrecking his own vehicle, using a baseball bat to smash a auto window and burglarizing a gas station.
