Sam Darnold made a stellar debut despite throwing a pick-6 on his first National Football League pass and the New York Jets intercepted five passes while routing the Detroit Lions 48-17 in their season opener Monday night. That led to Isaiah Crowell's 6-yard touchdown run. There's always going to be one-year guys, two-year guys and 10-year guys.
The Jets quarterback finished with respectable figures of 198 yards from 16 completions out of 21 attempts, including two touchdowns.
Jermaine Kearse is doubtful for the Jets on Monday so they'll rely upon last year's breakout wide receiver Robby Anderson and Quincy Enunwa as the two primary targets. There were just too many points allowed on defense. Stafford was picked off by cornerback Morris Claiborne, which gave the Jets great starting field position for the second straight drive.
The 21-year-old Darnold was the youngest quarterback to start a season opener since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
NY scored on the ground and through the air, on defense and on a punt return by former Lion Andre Roberts.
Following the game, the Jets players said that the formations, as well as hand signals from Matthew Stafford, tipped the plays to the NY defenders. Darnold is going to win games, and he's going to headline the highlight reel, and the Jets just might be close in record to the Lions by season's end anyway.
Speaking of passing, Matthew Stafford ranked third in passing yards and fourth in passing touchdowns last season. "There's not a lot of, 'Hey, good job!' There's a lot of, 'Hey, bad job, bleep, bleep, bleep'". The Jets then took control.
In the game, they scored three touchdowns of over 40 yards, and Roberts' 78-yard punt return was the pick of the bunch.
Darron Lee celebrates a play in the second half against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. It'll probably be a low-scoring game.
Below you will find the latest injury report for both teams, courtesy of the Media Relations Department of the Jets. "Hope I never have to say that again". They added a field goal for good measure.
Sam Darnold on the support he's gotten from players like DL Steve McLendon and the rest of the Jets D.
Working together with the D-line, the Jets held Detroit to just 39 yards on fifteen carries. Jameis Winston had his first pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown in 2015.
Detroit is at San Francisco next weekend. Breaking Sam Darnold in slowly, so if they have the ball, I could see it ending in a run.
