The former President acknowledged the contrast between himself and McCain, saying, "We were standard-bearers of different American political traditions".

"America does not boast, because she has no need to", Meghan McCain said.

As a presidential candidate, Trump mocked McCain for getting captured in Vietnam. "It was a bipartisan rejection of this kind of politics that is inherently grounded in division". Though he was unwelcome and was not mentioned by name, the event stood as an indictment of Trump's rule and the ideals his opponents believe he has crushed. He was honored at a memorial service on Thursday held at the Arizona state Capitol. His loss, and the code by which he lived became a metaphor for something now gone from the nation's civic arena.

Former President Barack Obama said, "After all, what better way to have a last laugh than to have George and me say nice words about him to a national audience".

Obama said: "We come to celebrate an extraordinary man, a warrior, a statesman, a patriot who embodied so much that is best in America". Obama added, "When all was said and done, we were on the same team".

Some of the tributes, however, had hints of a parting shot at the president and current leader of the GOP.

Among those who served as pallbearers included actor Warren Beatty, Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza, former Vice President Joe Biden, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, FedEx founder Fred Smith and billionaire investor Ronald Perelman. Trump, meanwhile, left the White House in the presidential motorcade shortly after 10:30 a.m., as the service was underway, headed to his Virginia golf course.

Before the service, Mr McCain's procession will pass the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where his wife, Cindy, is expected to lay a wreath.

When it comes to McCain's time as a prisoner of war, Bush said he "loved freedom with the passion of a man who knew its absence".

"Those in political power were not exempt".

Trump was, however, not present at the service in accordance with the wishes of the late lawmaker.

Obama also opened up about his behind-the-scenes relationship McCain and the bond they shared across party lines.
