Disney has delayed production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 indefinitely following the firing of writer/director James Gunn, according to The Hollywood Reporter. On Aug. 15, Variety reported that Disney and Marvel were standing strong on their decision not to re-hire Gunn for the third installment despite pressure from the "Guardians" cast, including Chris Pratt and Zoe Saldana. Fans have since started petitions and protests to put Gunn back in the director's chair, but so far, Marvel and Disney have stuck by their decision.
But after some alt-right Twitter pressure (they also spread rumors about Gunn being "another Hollywood pedophile" using the bad jokes as evidence - this is apparently their go-to strategy now), Disney quickly caved and fired him. While there could be any number of delays affecting the film, the fact Disney and Marvel have yet to announce a replacement for Gunn, or even a potential replacement, is the culprit here.
Do you think James Gunn should be rehired for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3?
"The timeline has been pushed out", an unnamed source told THR. However, after the filmmaker's problematic old tweets resurfaced online, he was sacked from the project by Disney. The Guardians team will next be seen in Avengers 4 when it releases on May 3, 2019.
The film's cast, as well as many other people in the industry, have spoken out about the precedent that this sets for the studio of firing someone for things they did before being hired.
Taika Waititi, who directed the crowd-pleasing Thor: Ragnarok, reportedly recently had a meeting with Marvel, "but it is unclear what project was discussed".
