Man arrested after car crashes into barriers outside Houses of Parliament

The men, who were later arrested, then went on a stabbing rampage at nearby Borough Market.

Police patrol on Millbank in central London after a auto crashed into security barriers outside the Houses of Parliament, in London, Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2018. He killed one policeman before he was shot and killed by armed officers.

LONDON -London's Metropolitan Police say that they are treating the crash outside of Parliament as a terrorist incident. I could see smoke coming from the bonnet of the auto.

"At 07:37hrs on Tuesday 14 August, a silver Ford Fiesta collided with a number of cyclists and pedestrians, before crashing into barriers outside the Houses of Parliament".

Westminster station is closed for entry and exit, Transport for London said, and is open only for interchange between lines.

Footage showed the vehicle taking a wrong turn into a group of cyclists waiting at traffic lights before veering across the road and into a lane leading to Parliament before hitting the barrier as two police officers jumped to safety. Witnesses told reporters that the man was led away in handcuffs by officers as ambulances and police vans surrounded the scene.

The suspect, who was said to not be co-operating with officers, was not known to security services, Metropolitan Police counter-terrorism head Neil Basu said. London police say that a vehicle has crashed into barriers outside the Houses of Parliament and that there are a number of injured. Officers remain at the scene.

He has been further arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, Scotland Yard said on Wednesday.

Streets around Millbank, Parliament Square and Victoria Tower Gardens have been cordoned off following the crash.

In October past year, 11 people were injured when a auto collided with pedestrians near London's Natural History Museum, raising fears of an attack, but police later said the incident was a road traffic accident. "I've seen people, about 10, on the road, lying down, but I haven't seen any fatalities", Williams said. "I heard some noise and someone screamed", she said. The police were very fast, they vaulted over the safety barrier and headed towards the vehicle.

Media reports said a cyclist was among the injured. So I've just started to run and the police were saying "get out, get out of the area". "There was about 10 cyclists waiting for the lights to change... he hit about four or five - one of the cyclists got up and was about to chase the auto".
