He was 94 years old.

Stalin was accompanied by some party colleagues.

Massive crowds gathered overnight as Chennai's Kauvery Hospital on Monday evening revealed that the condition of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi has further declined.

Despite the best possible efforts by our team of doctors and nurses to resuscitate him, he failed to respond. The 94-year-old 5 time Tamil Nadu chief minister Karunanidhi, fondly known as Kalaignar was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Kauvery Hospital on July 28 after a dip in blood pressure.

After independence, Periyar's movement split into two.

In the meantime, Karunanidhi's wife and Alagiri's mother Dayalu Ammal, accompanied by her son and grandsons, was driven to the hospital from their Gopalapuram residence.

MGR led AIADMK to victory in the party's debut Assembly polls in 1977, and in 1980 and 1985. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said the DMK leader was one of the leading and longstanding politicians of our country who left a mark of his own during his long public life of about 80 years including 56 years as member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. He has often exhorted in favour of widow-remarriage, abolition of zamindari, dissolution of untouchability and self-respect marriage - marriages conducted without being officiated by a Brahmin priest.

He was a prolific literary figure, apparently penning over 2 lakh pages of poems, novels, biographies, plays, songs and dialogues in his lifetime.

Earlier state Congress president S Thirunavukkarasar informed the media after visiting Kauvery Hospital today that there was a minor setback in "Kalaignar's" condition this morning.

He and Ms Jayalalithaa, who died in 2016, alternated as chief ministers over the past three decades in the state. The DMK founder passed away in 1969.

Karunanidhi, who wrote scripts for Tamil cinema before entering politics, faced allegations of corruption and nepotism.

A big political jolt for Karunanidhi came when MGR rebelled against him in 1972, accusing him of corruption and demanding details of the party's finances. With time, he rose in power and position within the party and was the party's treasurer by 1961.
