Small plane crashes in Santa Ana shopping center parking lot; 4 people reported killed

McLaughlin says Hakimi's son Navid Hakimi and Shepherd's husband Scott Shepherd, the plane's pilot, were also killed Sunday.

Five persons have been killed after a small aircraft crashed in Santa Ana city in the USA state of California, officials said.

Bommarito explained the plane was on its way to nearby John Wayne Airport, and it is possible the pilot intentionally avoided people on the ground during the plane's collision to limit the number of casualties. There was no fire, he said.

It was not clear if anyone was hurt on the ground, as the plane went down and hit at least one unoccupied auto, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi told City News Service.

The Orange County Fire Authority said fire and rescue units were sent to a the 3900 block of Bristol Street for a report of a plane down.

The Cessna 414 Chancellor crashed in Santa Ana, approximately a mile from John Wayne Airport, in the parking lot of a shopping center, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac.

"Bodies were hanging from out the side of the plane", witness Jesse Perez told the Orange County Register.

Tweets from people near the scene show a crumpled plane among the cars and palm trees of the parking lot. "I couldn't believe what was happening".

A driver captured the moment the plane spiraled to the ground on a dashboard camera.

The pilot had declared an emergency before the incident, and national transportation authorities are now investigating the cause of the crash.
