Los Angeles police report possible hostage situation at Trader Joe’s

The episode began around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday when Atkins got into an argument at a South Los Angeles residence with his grandmother and allegedly shot her seven times, police said.

Police said the suspect shot his grandmother and girlfriend on Saturday before leading police on a auto chase that ended when he crashed into a pole and ran inside the supermarket as bullets from officers shattered the front doors. The grandmother was hospitalized in critical condition on Sunday. An hourslong standoff ensued before the officers escorted the suspect out of the Trader Joe's at around 6:30 p.m. Los Angeles police later announced that a female victim was fatally struck by gunfire.

Don Kohles, 91, was walking into the supermarket when he saw a auto being chased by police crash into a pole just outside.

He was then involved in a police pursuit, during which he allegedly shot at officers. There was no update on her condition on Sunday, they said.

Photos posted on social media show a auto crashed outside the store entrance as heavily armed police swarm the area.
