Former Tesla employee Martin Tripp has filed a whistleblower tip with the Securities and Exchange Commission in which he alleges the company lied about Model 3 production numbers and put unsafe batteries in its cars, The Washington Post reports.
Musk said Tesla had previously gambled its existence on its first and second vehicles, the Roadster sports auto and Model S sedan.
The former Tesla employee who was sacked and then sued by the electric vehicle automaker has filed a formal whistleblower tip to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleging the company has misled investors and put its customers at risk.
China's fast-growing market for new-energy vehicles presents a massive growth opportunity for Tesla.
Giant carmaker Tesla has announced that they are building a "Gigafactory 3" in China, a "bold" move that will allow them to produce some 500,000 vehicles per year for Chinese customers. "We hope it will be completed very soon". Tesla made 2,685 Model 3 vehicles in 2017.
"Several states and local utilities offer additional electric vehicle incentives for customers, often taking the form of a rebate", the company points out on its incentives information page. BAIC Group's EC line, starting at $22,000, sold 13,000 units in December, almost matching Tesla's 2017 total.
"I think that you'll see something similar to what they did in Nevada, with a partner like Panasonic", said Mr Kallo, referring to the gigafactory that Tesla and its Japanese battery-cell supplier operate along near Reno.
Levy said hopefully the trade spat would be resolved by early next year, but "by putting a plant in China it prevents future tariff increases from being impactful".
"Such an aggressive timeline is classic Elon Musk, especially considering that components of Gigafactory 3, such as the advanced manufacturing robots and machinery that would be used to build the vehicles, would likely be coming from overseas", the report said.
"If foreign automakers develop and build electric vehicles in the country, its domestic industry has the chance to absorb new, advanced technologies, helping China transform from a mere market into an automaking heavyweight", a report added.
