Microsoft has officially confirmed the release of the Surface Go, its new budget 2-in-1 device aimed at students and those looking for an ultra-portable and versatile laptop.

The Surface Go is available to pre-order now, with prices starting at "a very tempting £380", says Alphr.

Long-rumoured, recent weeks have seen leaks on Reddit and reported filings with the FCC, suggesting the appearance of a new tablet from the Silicon Valley giant was imminent.

Rumours had previously stated that a new, cheaper Surface tablet would be coming to market around the second half of 2018. It's a little heavier than the Surface Go and measures up at almost a couple of inches longer, but that doesn't detract from it being a versatile, compact device. Prices range from $399 to more than $549.

Prices for the Surface Go start at $399 (around £300) but no upper limit has now been stated.

"When we designed this device, we had to ask ourselves what people want and need from a 10" Surface", Microsoft chief product officer Panos Panay wrote in a blog announcing the device. The Surface Go Signature Type Cover is custom-made for Surface Go integrating design features that give the user the best typing experience possible, with ergonomic key pitch and exceptional key travel.

Pre-orders start Tuesday; Surface Go hits stores on August 2. Meet the Surface Go, a $399 Surface device that's cheaper, less powerful, but far more compact than its bigger siblings. Speaking of which the battery can muster up to nine hours of life, according to Microsoft.

As it's essentially geared for running Office, doing some light photo editing and streaming content on Netflix or YouTube, it's not really going to be a complete powerhouse.

Other available accessories for Surface Go include a mobile mouse for $34.99 and a $99 Surface Pen you can use to draw or write on the multi-touch (1800x1200) screen - and yes, your older Surface Pen will work here. The Surface Go has a built-in kickstand with an adjustable hinge. It has different ports, including Surface Connect for charging and docking; USB-C 3.1 for data, video, and charging; a headphone jack; and a MicroSD card reader for storage expansion.

The dimensions of the Surface are Go 244 x 175 x 7.6 mm and weight about 520 grams.

When do pre-orders open?

The new tablets come in multiple configurations, including 64GB, 128GB and 256GB storage options and 4GB or 8GB of RAM.
