The conservatives urged Trump to keep an open mind on Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the 7th Circuit, whose confirmation hearing tete-a-tete with Sen.

"Justice Kavanaugh has the most experience but Justice Hardiman is the one that will get through the Senate more easily and he would bring better legal mind to the United States or in court than all four", Valentino told News10NBC. Trump's sister Judge Maryanne Trump Barry also sits on the 3rd Circuit and reportedly backed Hardiman for the seat Gorsuch eventually filled.

Trump previous year appointed Neil Gorsuch, who has already become one of the most conservative justices, after Senate Republicans in 2016 refused to consider Democratic former President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland to fill a vacancy left by the death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia.

The announcement came hours before Trump is due on Monday night to name his pick to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, marking an official start to a massive debate in the Senate on the future of the Supreme Court.

One Democrat from a red state, Alabama's Doug Jones, told CNN's "State of the Union" Sunday that he did not rule out voting for Trump's nominee. Not long after Schumer spoke, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell accused the "far left" of engaging in "scare tactics" over the nominee. Besides McGahn, he has the support of some Republicans who admire his record as a lawyer working with independent counsel Ken Starr in the investigation of President Bill Clinton and later in the George W. Bush White House as well as his conservative record as a judge.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal judge last fall - excited social conservatives since she was questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings past year, but her brief time on the bench has raised questions about her experience.

Democrats have little leverage as they try to halt the nomination - though the court's rightward lurch could stoke liberal turnout in the midterm elections in which the House of Representatives is in play. With the expected absence of Republican senator John McCain due to brain cancer, Republicans only have 50 votes.

All of the four states were carried by Mr. Trump in 2016. We don't know who this nominee is going to be yet.

Later in the week, the president also suggested that of the four reported shortlisted candidates, he had preferences, telling reporters: "I think I have it down to four people".

While Democrats are flailing, Trump can hardly lose.

Any of the candidates on Trump's short list would probably move the court to the right.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said Sunday President Trump is acting like a "puppet" for outside groups and claimed Trump is set to nominate a "fringe ideologue" to the Supreme Court. The ad is expected to feature an introductory bio on the president's yet-to-be-named Supreme Court nominee.
