Thomas Markle also told "Good Morning Britain" on Monday that Harry was "open to the experiment" of Brexit, the decision for the leave the European Union.

Though he changed his mind after speaking with Meghan and Prince Harry, Markle said his medical condition ultimately prevented him from traveling.

Thomas Markle is a 1962 graduate of Newport High School in Perry County, Pennsylvania.

Heart surgery the week before the May 19 wedding meant Mr Markle couldn't travel to walk his daughter down the aisle of St George's Chapel, Windsor.

The retired lighting director opted not to attend the nuptials of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex last month because he was recovering from heart surgery but he watched the ceremony on TV and "cried" when he saw his "beautiful" offspring exchange vows with Prince Harry.

As for the invasion of his privacy after the engagement was announced, he said: 'I'm very proud of her, and I'll adjust to this.

He said he pulled out of attending and walking his daughter down the aisle for her second marriage because he couldn't get over what happened.

He said his daughter, who is now the Duchess of Sussex, introduced Prince Harry to him as "a nice guy from England".

"She's wanted children for a long time", Thomas said of his 36-year-old daughter.

He has yet to meet his daughter's grandmother-in-law, but looked forward to the experience.

He added: "I want to have a nice, normal relationship with my royal family as well now".

"Well, obviously, that all went to hell, and I feel bad about it", he said.

"I was very proud and I couldn't see a better moment in my life", Markle said.

"I can't think of a better replacement than someone like Prince Charles", he told the programme. He also said the series of staged paparazzi photos taken the week before the wedding was "a serious mistake". They're great and I love then dearly.

Of course, Harry and Meghan had to turn it out for such a lovely occasion, and they sure did!

"Meghan told me first", he said of the wedding plans, then "a couple" of phone calls later Harry - who he was told to call "H" for security reasons - got on the line. "I sort of disagreed with that but I still like Harry".

On the subject of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, or Brexit, Markle said: "It was just a loose conversation about something we have to try".

In the end, Meghan walked down the first part of the aisle unescorted, before she was joined by Charles, Harry's father and heir-to-the-throne.

And of Meghan Markle's mother, his ex-wife Doria Ragland, who cut a stylish but lonely figure as the only member of Markle's family to attend the wedding, he said: "My ex-wife is a attractive woman". It went wrong. I spoke to them [Meghan and Harry] and I apologized. "There was no real commitment to it", Markle said. I have had respect for that woman since I was a child.
