When they pulled into a parking lot outside the county courthouse, the deputies were "overcome", Bailiff said.
Police told KCTV they believe the inmate, who was shackled and handcuffed, used one of the deputies' guns to shoot them.
"This incident remains under investigation by the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, who is encouraging anyone with information to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474- TIPS (8477)", the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office said. Bailiff says the investigation is now being handled by the police department in Kansas City, Kansas.
Zeigler said both deputies were taken to KU Med Center for treatment.
The Kansas City Star reports that the shooting happened shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday in the middle of Barney Allis Plaza. Rohrer had been on the force for seven years, the Wyandotte County Sheriff's office said.
All three people were taken to an area hospital.
Several law enforcement departments offered words of support and prayers for Wyandotte County on social media.
She said she was not sure whether the suspect was shot by one of the deputies or someone else who responded to the incident.
He says no other suspects are being sought in the shooting.
Police Chief Rick Smith says the officers "did what they thought was necessary". The juvenile's condition is unknown.
Colon said officers deemed the woman's behavior threatening, and an officer shot the woman.
